Guide to Volunteering

You are invited to join us in serving God and one another.  At Family of God Church, we believe we are part of the Body of Christ. There are many ways for you to use your God-given gifts and help nurture your family in Christian faith.  This guide is an overview of many of the ways our congregation serve around the church and around the community as part of their faith journey. Virtually everyone tries to participate in at least one ministry.  Many of us do several ministries throughout the year.  There are opportunities available to suit a variety of talents and interests. Many long lasting friendships develop through these ministries. You are welcome to take a look to see if anything catches your interest.  We hope one or more ministry opportunities will lift your spirit and enrich your faith journey.  If you have questions or ideas, feel free to reach out to the contact person listed or call the office at 215-794-5973.

Help on Sundays and during the week for Worship

Altar Guild:  Our altar guild assists with preparing the sanctuary for worship.  This group works behind the scenes to prepare and decorate the altar for the holy days and the various liturgical seasons.  Folks work in teams of two a month at a time on a rotating basis.

Readers:  Volunteers proclaim the Word of the Lord during worship service reading the scripture readings at Worship.  When you read the lessons, you are helping nourish God’s people in the word.  You can sign up to read at service once in a while or join the rotating schedule.  Readings are sent to you several days before so you have time to prepare.

Greeters:  Greeters extend the hospitality and welcome to all as we enter the church building.  We ask greeters to arrive half hour before service, to welcome members and visitors as they enter church. If someone identifies themselves as a visitor, the greeter will ask them if they are familiar with the Lutheran service and offer to seat them with someone who can help them with the service.

Ushers:  Friendly ushers welcome members and visitors as they enter sanctuary, distribute bulletins and assist anyone who needs help getting to or finding a seat.  Ushers count attendance, help collect the offering and direct communicants to the altar when it is a communion service.  You can sign up to usher at service once in a while or join the rotating schedule.  Interested volunteers will receive detailed instruction.

Choir: All are welcome to join our choir - the young and the young at heart; men, women and children.  If you like to sing or play an instrument, we would love for you to join us as we praise God through music.  We practice on Wednesday at 7:30 and sing at service on Sunday mornings.  Contact: Mike Russo gtmrusso@verizon.net

Bell Choir:  Our handbell choir is always welcoming ringers, new or experienced!  We meet on Wednesday at 6:30 pm and perform about once a month at service.  Contact: Sharon Shaw sharonshaw1945@gmail.com

Sunday School: Our preschool thru 6th grade Sunday School is currently held every Sunday during worship, September thru June.  The Middle/High School group meets on the first Sunday of the month.  Teachers and helpers needed.  Lesson plans provided. (PA State clearances required for all volunteers who work with children.)

Adult Education:  Adults meet for Christian Education once a week an hour before service.   They pick areas of study the group is interested in.   It is a great way to explore topics with a group and a fabulous way to get to know folks.  All are welcome.

Pray Ground:  Children of all ages are welcome to worship with their families in the sanctuary during service.   We believe children learn their faith from their parents while they worship. Please feel free to use the pray ground in the rear of the sanctuary at any time during the service, where there are coloring books and activities available.

Coffee hour: Every Sunday following service, we invite you to join us for coffee and fellowship.  It doesn’t cost anything but donations to help cover the cost of food and drinks are welcome.  We need help with set up and clean up.  Are you a baker?  Or maybe a shopper?  Either way – treats to share are always welcome!  Contact Gail Russo gtmrusso@verizon.net

Homebound Communion: Bringing our congregation's worship to peoples' homes and hospital bedsides is a joyful and fulfilling work for everyone who participates. The lay ministers bring worship -- the Word of God and Holy Communion -- from our congregation's service to the people at home.  Training provided for interested volunteers.
